Corrective Jaw Surgery
Corrective jaw surgery or “Orthognathic surgery” becomes necessary when there is a misalignment between the jaws and/or a lack of harmony between the teeth and jaws. Orthodontics is employed to straighten the teeth, while corrective jaw surgery is utilized to realign a jaw that is out of position. This not only enhances the facial aesthetics of our patients but also ensures that the teeth align properly and function effectively.
Who Needs Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery is beneficial for those with bite issues or misaligned jaws. Different jaw growth rates can lead to problems affecting chewing, speech, oral health, and appearance. Causes include injuries, birth defects, or growth discrepancies. While orthodontics addresses tooth-related bite problems, orthognathic surgery is necessary for repositioning the jaws.
Evaluation is recommended for difficulties in:
1. Chewing, biting, or swallowing
2. Speech
3. Chronic jaw or TMJ pain
4. Open bite
5. Protruding jaw
6. Breathing problems
These symptoms can be present from birth or acquired later due to hereditary, environmental factors, or facial trauma. A comprehensive examination with x-rays will precede any treatment.
